Guided Proactive Discovery -- The way we learn skills

What is Guided Proactive Discovery?

Guided Proactive Discovery is a new methodology for teaching computer and information technology skills. This methodology leverages the students natural inclination to the learn skills through the process of discovery. This methodology works best in an online environment and uses the tools and applications being learned as palatte for discovery. Instead of using simulations and other relatively passive means of application, our solution uses the Useractive Learning Sandbox to deliver Content, Real Tools, and instructor feedback.

Each word in the title "Guided Proactive Discovery" is important to our methodology:

Discovery - By distributing real tools and environments for students to experiment and build upon, we enable students to discover and practice the skills they are trying to learn.

Proactive - We encourage students to proactively experiment and explore the subjects and applications required of a skill.

Guided - Our Content guides students through the process of discovery. Also, our instructors respond to students needs and give valuable feedback along the learning route.

Why does Guided Proactive Discovery work?

Think of skill you have. Something you consider yourself very good at doing. It can be anything...tennis, mathematics, acting, driving a car, juggling, golf, music, etc. Once you think of something--or several things if you're lucky--think back to the process of learning that skill. How did you learn it? What was happening while you were learning? How did you get better?

It is almost certain that you actually did a lot of discovering on your own. You learned that if you gripped the tennis racket just a certain way, you could serve better. Sure, you may have been told to try it by a coach or a friend, but you discovered just the right way that worked for you.

What you didn't do was to sit in a classroom hour after hour and watch someone tell you how to do it and what to do. That's not how you learn skills. You don't learn skills by watching someone else do it. For instance, I've watched people juggle all my life, but I certainly can't juggle!

The process of learning a skill is the same no matter what the skill. You:
  1. try something,
  2. get some type of response from what you tried,
  3. evalute the results, and
  4. try again.

What we've done at Useractive is to build technologies that enable and guide students through the process of discovering Information Technology Skills.

How does Useractive support Guided Proactive Discovery?

We have built the Useractive Learning Sandbox to not only deliver any computer related technology or application, but to also work seamlessly with instructional content written to guide students through the discovery process. With tools for instructors and students to work through problems--on their own time and schedule--the Learning Sandbox is the ideal learning environment.
